The Substance of Beauty
What has substance? A brick? A stone?
My own body, fuller than I'd like?
The pan of bread I've taken from the oven?
The infant I love far beyond life itself?
All have a loveliness all their own.
Few would dispute their substance.
What of the lovely flower swaying in the breeze?
The burgeoning white blooms on an apple tree?
Rows of spreading trees that display
clouds of exquisite lavender jacaranda blossoms.
A feast of beauty to surfeit eyes
with such weight it has - substance.
