Proud blue jay rebuilds after spring storm that has ravished his home. Humbled again
by nature’s force, he gathers small sticks, pieces of scattered straw, then flies to crook between tallest trees in my backyard.
Distraught mother looks on in disbelief. Their offspring gone, killed by violent wind she could not save them from. Too many times she has seen him turn to productivity frenetic activity to provide safe shelter sure to be blown away by an unfriendly wind.
Her voice muted temporarily by grief, her heart still sings, grateful for his steadfastness, fidelity, stubborn persistence that seems futility in light of life’s dark storms.
