You hear all about Haikus in school, and every poet has to try his/her hand at them, but I like Tankas better. I'm glad you wrote this.

For anyone who doesn't know: The tanka is a Japanese form, and is, essentially, an extended Haiku. Because of that, quite often the haiku part is separated from the last two lines, so it goes Haiku--Couplet (all unrhymed). There is also a form of Tanka that's called Waka, where the couplet part is about a different subject than the haiku part.

And when two people write a tanka together: One writes the haiku, the other a couplet response, then that is called a Renga, and it is very fun to write a chain of them. A Renga chain would be fun to do in this den. --Charlie

Aw drat!!! Everybody seems to be taken with tanka these days. I tried my hand at it about a year or so ago, maybe I'll try it again . . . Although I don't think I will ever be able to match what you have done here . . . Clever and inspiring . . .

This is such a talented lady - in response to her light hearted blog about Tanka poetry, she creates a wonderful work that captures the beauty and spirit of the medium. Ms. Lerwill is an amazing writer. She should think about publishing a book of her magnificent poetry.
