I went to the zoo
well, it was something to do
hadn’t been there in years

impressed by the design
simulated habitats
for the species comfort

some seemed content
alert and playful
flying, swimming, grazing

some seemed bored
napping not moving
in the shade or shelters

the otters behaved insanely
repetitive back flips
over and over in the same place

the tigers were playful
the lions were sleeping
the bears paced back and forth

so many signs described
endangered species
mankind had plowed over their lands

here in this make shift world
they existed without starving
or fear of predators attack

did it change who they were
their natural instincts
affecting the will to survive

I thought of national parks
where the animals were
still free, but protected

and yet,
incidents of poaching
still existed

wild life parks
large enclosed compounds
for free range roaming

yet animals separated
into non predatory categories
and still daily fed by man

at least in the wild
in natural selection
it was survival of the fittest

here in the zoo
what if the keepers didn’t come
would the animals starve to death

as usual, I was analyzing
thinking out loud
questions without easy answers

it is what it is, the zoo
and the weather was nice
I relaxed, and just enjoyed its beauty

A delightful and observant look at modern day zoos...I prefer to see wild animals and creatures roaming free in their natural environment...where it is survival of the fittest....though there is a case for protecting endangered species...

Some animals are contented in small environment; some are better off running free in the wild. That is why some seemed happy and contented and others seemed not. You are very observant.

Thank you for your review on my poem "My Words".

I visit zoos often, just to see how the animals are treated; and I, too, am torn on the issue. In mankind's haste to black top over the wilderness, far too many creatures are destroyed, and far too many are teetering on the brink of extinction. Yet, they were 'born free' and probably should have the right to be free.

Really don't know what the answer is; but I truly do hope that we don't lose too many more.

sounds like you've been to the bronx zoo ... to see animals encaged in not too appealing ... at least in the bronx zoo they give them a large area to frolic in so that children as well as adults get a glimpse of creatures they would have never seen in their lifetimes ...

I'm torn on the whole zoo issue, for I don't think so many people would send money to support Giant Pandas if they hadn't fallen in love with them at a zoo (or other species for that matter). But, I can't figure out if the animals are better off or happier or not. Would I prefer to live like my ancestors, seeking food, full of parasites, hot and sweaty or freezing cold, forever alert for the approach of predators, with a high infant mortality rate and shorter lifespan? Many animals come to us from the wild and sure seem happy lounging around our property, stealing eggs and food for the cats. I say we enjoy them, support them, and try to encourage all zoos to provide bigger enclosures, more natural settings, and the diet closest to what any given animal would enjoy in the wild. Glad you supported your local zoo recently! I try to visit new ones everyplace I go!

It is what it is, says it all. I used to love the zoo Debby.
Then I got older and wondered why they had to be caught and caged
Then I did as you did, accepted that it is what it is.;-)Big help aren't I!;-)

Very reflective, Debby. I share your questions, wish there were some answers, commend you for your equanimity.

You captured its essence well. A zoo is but a contrivance to allow us to gape at animals we wouldn't otherwise see. Fortunately, zoos are becoming aware of their new role of saving species from our ignorance, too.

you hit on something that touches me...I have not been to a zoo in years...I find them rather sad, but, as you hint at here, perhaps necessary. Man has so little respect it seems for the creatures he shares this world with.
Job well done here, Debby.
