Poem Artwork

they felled the aspen today
the one with the eyes that seemed to keep watch
when I sat in my garden and watched the squirrel

the rabbit looked up from its morning munch
to wonder perhaps if the sun was brighter
since the leaves no longer shaded the
space in which it sat

the birds seemed oblivious
their nesting cycles completed
they now rested in other branches
as these were laid to rest on the lawn

the aspen seemed to sigh relief
for it was free of its containment
its energy disbursed to be something new
perhaps one of the animal kingdom
it had nurtured over these many years

perhaps the wind it knew so intimately
of every seasons limb and leaf that swayed
and shimmered in those currents

perhaps the earthworm
which had so dutifully aerated
the compacted earth
and was now wriggling in its
upliftment with the roots

does this… once a tree
now decide what it shall be?

for it was man that planted it
and it was man that felled it

but the energy of what it is
the reality of who it is
will always live in the soul of its existence

Your poetry is touch with a beautiful world of which you make observations only those in touch with make - I for one always consider trees sentient and worthy of thought when taking them. As for red wrigglers: where are they when I want to dig some for panfishing? Never around and I hate buying them.... Hey such a lovely lake you're standing by in your bio-pic - mind me asking where?

This is a lovely look at the nature that surrounds us and a personal glimpse at the poets thoughts on the soul of the world outside...

My first response was to write: "Amen, sister!" But, I thought that might sound a little over-the-top fanatical. So, upon gaining my composure, I'll say: "Yes, love the last lines; love your thought process. Beautiful writing."

Absolutely beautiful. Life through the eyes of squirrel and a tree, how imaginative. But it's the last part that says it all, and you wonder why Man tries to destroy himself.
