new is not always best

It sits dark, quiet and empty

A room with fancy chairs

An oak table to match

A beautifully remodeled room,

Who could ask for more than that?

Why do I speak of this boring room

where all the “suits” abound?

It sits there quietly with nothing to do,

until the big shots come around.

A time not long ago, an ugly metal

table was there.  The chairs were torn
and tattered, no one even cared.  The looks
didn’t matter; only joy filled the air.

Pot lucks were held once a month, and

Everyone got a birthday cake.  Office

Meetings were held with an old school
chalkboard, one with a badly scratched slate.

Many people enjoyed that old
break room, lunch room, and all the

Fun we knew.  Everyone laughed and

Smiled, now all that’s left is gloom.

But progress is progress as everyone knows.
After all, we have new furniture, the room is

State-of-the art.  The sterile place makes
me want to cry, it simply breaks my heart.

And when the room changed, so did everything else.

Mary, without a unique character, what is room but an enclosed space? -- a moving story in support of that premise -- peace and love to you my friend -- Jon Michael

I appreciate and empathize with what you have expressed here, Mary. New is often not better at all. Love and best wishes,

I know the feel of this one all too well as anyone from our age group who lived through the old is comfortable and secure to the new is exciting but lets cut jobs to pay for it era.

You hold such golden memories within your heart of a time when laughter ruled. No, sometimes progress really is not progress...

Be always safe,

Very interesting commentary on the old and the new .... how many times new does not mean better. However, I disagree that there is more intensity in today's problems. Each age had it's own-- that is for sure. We know about the differences of opinions and the intensity more today because we have access to more news, more internet sources, more opportunities to express our viewpoint - places like blogs. Mary your message is interesting -- I think it says not to expect "new" to solve our problems. We need to remember each other day by day and work together. Susan

One step forward and two steps back. I agree with Rose; progress is definitely not always for the best. Well said my friend.

Yes, Mary, the empty and beautiful that no one enjoys, only for show; strong, extended metaphor.

Progress isn't always better, sometimes the old is where there is love , laughter and joy.

AAh, sometimes progress wrecks havoc with the human element, 'tis true, Mary. I am all for growth, but I also have a thought that growth should factor in the human spirit. Nice work.

Mary
You are definitely have a strong social conscious and it is reflected with genuine sincerity in your work. I have a tendency to dwell on the past, only because of the complexity of society today, which makes me want to cry. No era was perfect--they all had problems, but not with the intensity today. Your poem is a picture perfect example of too much change and that's not always good. Great job again.
