When did I start getting old?

I was watching small children the other day
climbing trees and wrestling at their innocent play
Like young warriors both fearless and bold
and I wondered when I started getting old

I remember one time when I was young and free
looking at the world from the top of a tree
Sitting and thinking on a thick oak tree limb
that I owned the world and all that was within

Catching a fish that was as big as my arm
believing that no one could ever do harm
My only fear was finding a young beauty
who wished to kiss me because girls had cooties

No one loved me more than my Mom
who always had a soft lap to sit upon
The days were all warm then and never were cold
and still I wonder when I got old

I am older now and things have all changed
I now have a job and bills to arrange
I have a car, insurance and home
and now and again I have aches in my bones

I am now much older I have no time for fun
I now lack the energy to play and to run
But one thing I still know as old as I be
that age makes no difference,my Mom still loves me

Oh Sean! This poem is so filled with sentimental values. I just can't help it, I have to read it again and again and again.

It is so nice to something like this on the board. I like the rhyming as well.

A poem of superb quality!

Yes, Sean, your mom will always love you. And poems like this make her cry as they touch her heart and it burst with pride.

Such a beautiful poem, especially the last line ,but ,you CAN still climb a tree if you really want to,I am 51 years old and still find trees to climb ,you are only too old if you stop believing that you (anyone) can do anything.I loved your poem.
