Dylan Days

Your slow train came too slow today
to be more than just a song
the wind blew through again today
but the answers took too long
a small breeze blew again today
but the questions were all wrong

Democracy, messiah is here
with bloody hands and war
with foreign aide and foreign strings
and payments for the whore
a birdless bush with bloody hands
and payments from a whore

the stoned were stoned as freedom rang
the widowed mothers cried
the children learned to starve again
as false messiahs lied
the children learned to hate again
as false messiahs lied

This land damn sure ain’t my land
it’s no Woody Guthrie song
and while some still dream of tie dyed days
their stains have bled too long
they dream of tie dyed Dylan days
but their stains have bled too long

A powerful indictment of the wrong direction America turned after World War II. The first few steps were in the right direction and then Vietnam happened. Too bad President Kennedy was killed since shortly before his death he ordered American forces in Southeast Asia to leave--he didn't want to get sucked into the same mess China was in for several hundred years and the French after them. Johnson, on the other hand, after being sworn in, canceled that order and dreamed up the Tonkin Gulf Incident (something that never happened). I was in Marine Corps boot camp at the time and ended serving a tour in Vietnam.

In recent times it seems that America has had far too many false messiahs lying and leading America into more messes. The sad thing is that it appears for to few seem to care. Maybe the upcoming Presidential election will change all of that. We can only hope.

One thing for sure: Most of the people that built America and made it great are gone. Current, young generations are too (correct me if you feel I'm wrong) self centered and narcissistic. They want to have fun and feel they are owed before they are even eighteen.

Damn straight Lori, this is as good as Dylan ever composed and would make one hell of a protest song. Not only have you rekindled the idea of what Dylan's philosphy once preached you have taken it one step further by reminding us old hippies that there is still hope in the young who came after us to stand up against the man again someday. May sound corny but the children are our only hope.

Great poem lori. Being one who once tie-dyed everything in sight (Including the cat) I can relate to to futility of going back with the mindset I posess today.

I feel the reverberations of this on so many levels and resounding through so many of today's current events. I relate it to the war in Iraq and how on some days it seems futile to try to save a country that refuses to heal its own internal conflicts; diplomacy tying our hands, making a clear strategy a near impossibility...and then we have the Saudis who stand ready to, once again, stab us in the back if we should try to turn the reigns over to the Iraqis. On another level we have John Kerry going to visit with the soldiers serving in Iraq, to try to make amends for his despicable actions back in the "Dylan Days" and his heartless and degrading comments of last month. I will take freedom in whatever form I can have it, but I certainly do feel the tentacles of terror causing many of my rights to be stripped from me. This is a difficult time, to be sure, but I am not ashamed to call myself an American nor will I ever turn my back on the brave souls who are dedicated to preserving freedom, even if it means that they will give their life in its defense. Powerful write, Lori, perhaps it could even be read as a well stated rant, either way, you certainly struck a cord with me and ruffled my feathers a bit, in the process.
Take care,
Sherry
