Southern California does not have a normal climate.

Poem Artwork

Fall whispered through the windows this morning.

“Hello, I’m here.” The trees rattled as acorns dropped.

Squirrels quarreled on the porch, rapscallions dashing

Past the conversation to pad their own nests.

Summer’s blazing heat covered like a forgotten campfire.

Fog settles its gauzy quilt over the land. People zip jackets,

Teens rub their bare arms, for no, they won’t wear a sweater

Because Mom says they should, such a nerd, Mom is.

A neighbor’s chimney puffs smoke, redolent of apple wood

Lemons, persimmons, late roses scent the air.

Will fall stay? Hints of autumn are not enough.

It’s time to end the summer’s frenetic carnival.

There’s work to do.

That scene is beautiful and certainly not Southern California. I miss autumn greatly here in Texas. At least you have your retreat in Arkansas. The last time I was there––to Hot Springs in the fall––was several years ago.

Beautifully written and expressed.

First signs of Fall in Portland, Or. this weekend; cool temps, and rain...and soon our neighbors will start using their fireplaces and wood stoves...I love the fall and I love your poem.
Cheers,
Dan

Yesterday and today, so far, here in Thousand Oaks the mornings are cool and crisp and, as I take Mushy out for his 7:00 AM walk I do need a light jacket. And yes, it feels great to be on the cusp of fall. I love this poem of yours because, yes, it is as it is. Say "hi" to your husband for me.
