For Evan...

‘Neath the trees of yesteryear
we played a million games,
but one that I remember well
was a game with all our dolls.

We took such special care with them,
to keep them nice and clean.
We brushed their hair and dried their tears,
and dressed them up, so neat.

Sally was my dolly’s name
and her dark brown curly hair
sat perfectly above her brow
and gentle eyes of  blue.

My childish heart loved Sally so…
but my brother changed her name!
One day he came to bully me
and Sally came between…

He stole her from my aching arms
and started beating things with her!
He started singing some old song
and called her “Tomahawk…”

(Baby that is…)
“Oh, Tom-a-hawk Baby
Tom-a-hawk Baby…”*
(I can’t recall the rest…)

All I really know is this…
my dear departed Sally Doll
will, to my family,
forever more be known as…
the “Tom-a-hawk Baby.”

*Authors Note: Sung to the tune of  "Cherokee People"

Cryssa, this is wonderful, because it takes us all back to the memory of when we were children, and that bond between siblings...although at times, it could be trying...lol.

I used to feed my dolls to our St. Bernard, Cochise...He would of loved "Tom-a-hawk Baby"! :)
My brother and I would then head off to our tree fort, laughing about how fast Cochise bit her head off and devoured her in two seconds flat! LOL!
Memories...from the corner of my mind...
Enjoyed!
Love and Peace~

Shame on the little rat! I loved dolls. . .okay, I ruined more than one. Back in those days, you couldn't do a n y t h i n g with their hair.

Give anything to have my brother back, but man, can they be pests.

Tryin' t'see the funny side, but. . .NOT.

Mucho well told, however.

Now go buy yourself a doll in a beautiful dress. . .in a pretty case?

Hugs!

Oh how well we remember that song. I think the worst part was that I never remembered that Sally even had a name. And every time the subject came up we all burst into laughter and sang the Tom-a-hawk baby song. Sorry that probably hurt your feelings. Evan is such a nice big brother now, even though he is still a bit of a tease.

I think this is definitely one of my favorites. A very touching tribute to a wonderful childhood companion. hee,hee...
I will never be able to hear the "Cherokee People" song and sing any words other than Tom-a-hawk Baby. Psychologists sometimes say that violence is an act of jealousy, maybe Uncle Evan was jealous of you because you had a cute little brunette girlfriend. hee...hee...

In my very very younger days I was a little firecracker that gave a eye-shiners to a few bullies...
Sorry about Tom-a-hawk Baby though.

... I hope you hid his pistol caps and tore the wheels off his dumper truck, Cryssa! Girls always play (ahem!) fair but they certainly also know how to play mean... Give me a hamster or a stick insect any day... I too had three older brothers who teased me mercilessly, yet I only adored them even more. And so strange how boys will make a weapon out of ANYTHING... Neat memoir. xx

Oh, dear!! I know how it is to have a sibling tormenting me when I was little; I had two older sisters who gave me no END of grief, and our brother was good at picking on us, too! I also got it from my twin sister; I got it from both ends. I'd then take my frustrations out on the poor cat! (NO kicking the cat, just picking on her, to make her hiss. Mean, I know, but we thought it was hilarious!) It's a wonder the cat lived as long as she did; nearly nineteen years old when she finally kicked the bucket! LOL

Good write, but brings back memories. Hopefully by now he's gotten past that mean streak; my second oldest sister has; I don't know about the oldest one, though....*sigggggggggggh* My twin has moved past this too, but she still has her moments. :) I do too; I can be as stubborn as a mule at times! TRUST me. Ask StormSpinner; she knows! LOL

Great example of blank verse, but I ended up laughing instead of crying-- he cut off all her hair! A regular Sid with toys, he was. Poor, poor Sally... --Charlie

Poor Sally, poor you, having a brother tormenting you like he did! Hopefully (by now) he's outgrown it - leaving you with the memories. Well penned, Cryssa, I felt your sadness.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
