Call Me Grasshopper

I was watching an old Kung Fu rerun when this came to me...maybe it shouldn't have but here it is...

Teach me the wisdom of the universe
I begged of my teacher
Grasshopper, you must grasp the world
Clench it in your hand and turn it to dust
Before you can brush it away, leaving yourself
Clean and refreshed
What the hell did he just say?
Why is it all the deep stuff goes over my head
I watch David Carradine faithfully
I would have shaved my head if it would have helped
But I was at least smart enough to skip that
But I never knew what the hell
The old bald guy was telling grasshopper
The universe that rested briefly on my shoulder
And flew away with the grace of a butterfly
Left me feeling baffled and covered in bug shit
What is with this great enlightenment thing anyway
And where is my inner light, my karma or my yin (or is it yang)
I want to be grasshopper and soak up all that wisdom
Instead I’m just a common housefly
Leaving specks wherever I land, irritating those I touch
And waiting for that big flyswatter in the sky

Very well penned!!

When I saw the title it reminded me of a rhyme I remember from grade one called "Grasshopperty Green"

This is such a clever write, Sue. All of that deep stuff really can seem like a pile of ca ca. And most of the time, in my opinion, it is. Great poem.

I think you grasp a lot more then you let on Sue and if anything instead of a grasshopper or a fly I think you'd be more like a butterfly beautiful but elusive,

Take care,
Felix

Many times I didn't either - but for some reason it truly captivated me.

Hi Sue
Hmmm. You've had some excellent review reflections on this.
The Masters always reflect the Grasshopper back to himself.
Whether one is the fly on the wall or the Grasshopper is relative.
Each is the center of his own universe, as we can each only have one perspective and that is our own. When one finds their own center of perspective to be sufficient without measuring up to anyone elses view, this is the beginning of self-acceptance and peace in my experience. Very thought provoking. I loved that show too and often use the term grasshopper to wee ones. My dog Trooper loved to play with the grasshoppers he was fascinated by them.

The grasshopper hops around the world;
it would take him trillion of years to
brush the world to dust even if he owns it.

The fly flies in the sky;
learns from the people and the grasshopper,
found knowledge and owns the universe.

Very good. The first President of the "free" Czechoslovakia once said "Seek those who search for the truth, and run from those who found it." So, grasshopper, keep searching... it will come... when you least expect it...
