Loneliness has become my closest friend
It shares my solitary breakfast
After a night we’ve spent in complicity
Hand in hand we walk to work
And eat our lunch together
Our closeness is so complete
It shuts others out
And makes me totally dependant
On the only discourse it offers
Loneliness
What would I be without it
Could I be less alone
Than I am with it by my side
Would I?

Loneliness always leads to depression and you have expressed the emotions so beautifully. Sad, yes, but beautiful, all the same.

There is a big difference between alone and lonely, and this poem made me stop and think how I react to each. Both can be positive if used correctly. Not only do your poems provide entertainment while reading, they also force me to think later. Nice job.

A truly interesting and thought provoking piece, Sue. Some find being alone very comforting and safe; others find it their worst nightmare and hate it.

I think that all of us cover the spectrum that you speak of in some form or another; I have never understood whether I am an introverted extrovert or an extroverted introvert?! All I know is that my energy levels go up considerably when I am on my own. I love people, but give out much and usually exhaust myself - and them, probably!!?? And I live so much inside my own head (scary!!) that I feel continuously busy with no time, often, for companionship... but, when I am empty of my own futile agenda, THEN I look around and wonder where everyone is and what everyone is up to without me. I am my own worst enemy, I guess, and can't seem to be sociable on anyone's terms other than my own at the moment... You certainly press all our buttons with this well-crafted and most powerful (as always) write. You make your points in such subtle yet strong ways. I can relate well, though, to the sense that, having given up on the "need to communicate", the catch 22 you can get into when you DO need someone to share mutuality with is that you can no longer either be bothered to make the effort, or you feel there is no one left within reach... This is a very long-winded way of saying: EXCELLENT!! Somehow, though, people do tend to pick up on whether the Black Dog is with us when we get like this, and it is HIM they seek to avoid at these times, not us I think. Bless you and thank you. Sue,

Somehow I don't think we're ever alone when we find company with our own thoughts. Sort of makes us our own best friend.

There seems to be a pensive mood in the very air today, and you have excellently penned a sadness here that blends with Miles Davis' moarnful love songs on my stereo and the rain outside my window. I too, count lonliness as my companion...

Very good sis. I felt likwe that for many years. I thought since no one actually wanted anything to do with me, I might as take lonliness and make it my silent partner in life. And I always thought too, what I be without my lonliness. This is very good sis, thnx for sharing. May the Lord be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & (((HUGS))), Barbie
