      Battlefield, Night

The boy who hopes to paint
a masterpiece
{still a boy, make no mistake}
calms by letting himself be awed
by phosphorescent flashes
gorgeous as a blood-red sun,
saving a particular orange
and that peculiar green
edging a 4th-of-July stunner
for his repertoire, already
daubing them  in his mind
between Mars black and that
color with the name it pains
him to pronounce.  On the tip
of his tongue when the shell
hits.

The boy who hopes to race
in the Indie 500 -- just wait --
compares the racket to that
of a speedway.  Crowd roars
its approval as he rounds the last
curve, going all out, but then
in the blind spot something spins
him out.  That is when
the noise dies.

The girl {I see her as a girl}
who craves to be a doctor --
surgeon, actually --
mentally bandages a tear
in a gunfire-split sky
and shouts orders for morphine
and plasma stat. Good
she'll never know what happened
next.

The boys, the girls, the men, the women,
lie, squat, roll, crawl, bog down in muck
under fire beautiful enough to
hurt.  All the time hoping
for a break so they have a chance to
see dawn.

Outstanding Pea Poem!
This is a Masterful write, Phyllis, and I'm so in awe...I can't even speak, let alone write! I could draw it right now! I could paint it and still, never be able pronounce those damn colors, myself!
Why?
Love and Peace~

A wonderful pause caused by the blackout of night (even amidst the relentlessness of gunfire) giving us stark spotlight insight in the flashes and flares of the unfulfilled hopeful young lives that may not wake to see another dawn. Poignant and a very neat capture of the carnage of humanity and the upbuilding goodness and progress that goes with them. I like this a lot, Pea. TY Kate xx The futility of the situation makes them even more beautiful. xx

The boys, the girls, the men, the women

Far too many of them have sacrificed all, and far too few even realize, or pause to remember them, including our so called 'leaders.'

A most powerful piece, Phyllis.

...you paint a picture in words...visuals...dreams hopes wishes...of those listening...perhaps all shot to hell...giving it so much light in this wonderful poetic work.
excellent Phyllis...

They do too much for us. they need a way
out of there.
Bush goes around dancing like a silly fool
while boys and girls are dying.

Beyond brilliant. You really made the war hit home. Yes, those soldiers all have dreams and about 4100 of them will never have the chance and thousands of wounded will have a limited chance. You made that apparent in you awesome poem. Liz

If the boy and the girl were dying for a just war, then we'd say bravo but as it is these boys and girls are being used by corrupted politicians. Have a nice day,Phyllis. Safi

You paint the picture perfectly,Phyllis. A poem to keep and read
again and again. Having served in one war I continue to raise hell
with those who perpetuate such horrors. Thank you. -
