It seems like it's always been that way. When I was in grade school, the playground was full of bullies. I've learned that bullies usually have low self-esteem and have some ill-conceived notion that they can gain more respect and power by showing that they have control over someone they can control, usually someone smaller or younger. When in fact, they also may be being bullied.

The old idea of fighting back, doesn't work. Generally someone gets physically hurt. Mental problems need to be addressed as soon as they are discovered. All schools should have psychologists and any reported bullies should be immediately treated for mental problems, not placed in detention or punished in the usual sense, because it only adds to their feelings of low self-esteem and resentment. In the worst-case, they end up "getting even" by coming back to the school later after a well-planned attack is prepared.

Written from a the perspective of a ten year old. I like this style of writing. It puts you in the victims place. But...it also makes me feel quite young! LOL
