Shhh... There are times when it would really be best to say nothing.

Poem Artwork

Sword Words

Harsh, callous words
like jagged, brutal blade
pierce, rip, and shred
my heart;
cold, cruel steel
chills my essence
within the emptying veins
of my weakened self
and steals my laboured breathing.

My mind is faint, slipping;
grateful for oblivion of night.

Perhaps this time
benevolent darkness will obliterate
me
and all this hurting.

Once and for all
shadows will become
me
and all this pain
will be done.

How apt an anagram
for words
is sword.

How much sweeter
had you said nothing.

This is as powerful in 2016 as it was in 2010, Regis ... the Sanskrit word 'swor' is the root of English 'swear' and sword and means 'to cut' - here's to healing wounds and soothing scars ... be well, Jan

Sword Words - How true this is. I can remember times when I put my foot in my mouth, then sat back and wished I'd said nothing. I was a school teacher most of my life. I remember times when I said words to kids I wish I had not said. I could tell by the looks on their faces that I had said too much, too quickly.

Oh grip my heart and rip it out. . .why don't you!?! I wish upon that sweet child a sea of kind words growing from Truly Loving roots.

This poem is a powerful expression of the infliction of pain that the dark side of humanity often delivers. I feel that Love can wipe it out if we keep exposing it and loving the hurt away.

"Sword words" Yes, they are very much like a sword, and here is the proof, "Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat?" (Job 12:11) Then if one can't say something, which is good...maybe it's better to say nought.

Regis, Words can hurt worse than a knife and take longer to heal. If someone doesn't have something nice to say then they shouldn't say anything...Silence is golden when you can't find the right words! Gives you a chance to think things through before you over react and say something you will regret later. Love, and peace always! Chessly

AH!!! I've NEVER seen that anagram before, Regis... how dull I am! But this poem cuts to the quick and I can feel its icy chill run through my bones. When words "slap" me I feel stunned and immobilised for days... you capture this feeling so well. Come to think of it, perhaps I have been so for much of my life; it's an awful feeling of disempowerment. Bless you, darlin. One truly wonders how mere sounds or shapes on a page can be so cruel. xx

The poem is excellent; the wounding of the soul so graphic it brings a sadness and sympathy to the reader (me). Just think, if more individuals heeded your last line, what changes would be wrought. I sincerely hope this isn't your present experience!

Your images usually go hand in hand with the poem and this one is no exception.

This poem has a great message. The poem is written in such a way - from the choice of words to the imagery used - as to get the point across very well. It really hits home. Words are like a sword that can really do damage to the heart - make it bleed, make it hurt, bring the pain... Sometimes it is best to say nothing at all than to say something that will hurt someone. Words are a weapon and many people don't realize that. They might hurt someone with something they say to that person and not even know it...

I wonder why in two of the stanzas you have 'me' on a line by itself. I would actually move the pronoun to the line above it. I am also tempted to move 'my heart;' to the line above it as well. For me this betters the flow of the poem. But other than that the flow is good.

Thanks for sharing this emotional poem. People will definitely be able to relate to it.

This poem reminds me of a lyric I wrote years back about words being a weapon. I will post here on AD once I find it. Thanks for the reminder.
