“A ruffled mind makes a restless pillow.” ~Charlotte Bronte~

Poem Artwork

 Restless minds

Restless minds as blowing wind
Nary a thought in which to spin
Naught paths to grasp or seed to bear
Tumultuous thoughts on tepid air

Nary sleep found for relief
No moments rest a mind which leaps
Carried to the lands of waste
Desert dryness no escape

A carnival of missed gold rings
Naught one be caught its rigged you see
Thoughts floating on the darkened sea
White caps doth toss them out of reach

You pray for sleep that it may come
To stop the spinning wheel humdrum
But there you sit or there you lay
Apathetic minds be frayed

For life can have no favor choose
When all you wish to do is snooze
A body steamrolled paper thin
Mind fraught now tossed into bin

A moment’s sleep alas will come
But nay naught for the morning sun
A Midnight oil again you burned
Aye once again, yet still unlearned

I am familiar with "white nights" devoid of restful sleep. I can relate. Thank you, Lily. Love and best wishes,

Too many people have overactive minds. This covers the despair very well.

A restless mind is a wasted mind without sleep. You can't solve the problems so you need to sleep my dear. Very nicely written

This is so recognizable for all if us. We all have it from time to time that we can not sleep because of the thoughts spinning around in our head and nothing can stop it. And while we are tossing and turning, the blankets become hotter with every turn, what makes the spinning in your head even go faster and stronger

The kinship of restless minds is a phenomena that evades the mediocrity of sentient abandonment. But as your poem demonstrates for all to contemplate: the great way is not difficult for those who have no preference. Arresting and provocative.

Lily,
that sleep thing, it's such a piece of work isn't it! I am a night owl always burning the midnight oil, but when I do go to sleep I sleep like a baby. When the mind is restless, you are right there is no hope for a good nights slumber.

Great quote also!

Peace, love and light,
Amber

I like the line "Desert dryness no escape" for the endlessness that image makes. The gold rings being rigged and the teasing toss of keep-away the whitecaps play. The vision of "A body steamrolled paper thin" is a fabulous way to express how flattened we get with fatigue or weights of perceived problems. That image reminds me of the old wringer-washers which had two rollers through which to feed the textile articles and that is how a person can feel....all the juice, shape and dimension squeezed right out of us. Great words! ~~ Diana

Ah, the restless mind and the horror that can certainly bring to the one so afflicted. The restless mind is a marvelous way of capsuling it, because the mind will dart here and there and under and over, never sitting still long enough to find the peace which is right in from of it.

Wonderful poetry, Carol. Hah! Love the photo!
