I recall optimists before like Arthur C. Clarke who one time, in an interview, declared that "mankind can expand outward in the universe at the speed of light." And probably, if you look at it carefully, we can. We can consume all of the resources in the solar system, and then move on to the galaxy.
Other futurists like Mikhail Kaku, are also quite optimistic that we will move most of the population to cities where birthrates will drop and leave much of the countryside as wilderness for future generations to enjoy.
