Oh, does my heart ache to see you lying there
cradled in lush carpet of field grass
which softened your fall.
Was it a torrent of rain
or the blustery wind
that cracked you from your anchorage
to a magnificence of
intertwined limb and leaf,
sap and bark and root?
No matter ~ the reeds are watchful now
as frog remarks on end of day ~
fog returned to its source
setting sun glistening on resilient leaf blade.
Oh, how rich the quiet that is not still
as the chill air enfolds you
back to the soil which gave you life
~ nourished again.
You reminded me of the time when I climbed behind my house in West Virginia to a high point of land beyond a fence border to an ancient oak on a hilltop spared by a nearby newly completed four-lane highway. As I reached that ancient tree, it was surrounded by fallen limbs as large as trees, themselves. But, still stood regal and unbroken even after losing so many limbs.
