Why do we take for granted people that we will one day wish we had cherished every day, only after we have lost them?

Poem Artwork

Last weekend I spoke in anger, “Stop f***ing with that car again,”
But you said nothing.

On Sunday I regretted it and kissed you as you boarded the plane,
Yet you only smiled.

Friday they said something happened;
Silence became my destiny.

Today I said, “Can we talk?”
You didn’t reply.

Tomorrow I’ll ask, “Will you ever come back?”
You’ll whisper,
“Some day.”

This evening I’ll cry, clutching the medals
And that beautiful flag.

I like the poet's use of apostrophe, how she imagines her lover returning to her.

poignant read, too often we speak first and think later, it is the words said that cannot be unsaid that cause so much hurt

I am sad for the sadness in your words

never stop writing!

You have asked a question that haunts a lot of people, and even after experiencing a loss, and vowing not to make the same mistake again, people end up doing the same thing. We live for today without much thought about tomorrow. This was a very moving write, that really pulls on the heartstrings.

After that striking image, you wrote a even more striking poem. You wrote a mystery that can be discerned. People often go off to war one way, and come back, another. It is poetry like this that will eventually end the violence of war.

Silence is so piercing. It cuts in all the wrong places.
"Stop fucking with that car again" can be magical when spoken by
the right person. Even funny. I was once asked to speak to an audience of 6,000 people. They represented a big part of my life. As the hour approached, I did not feel up to the occasion. I went to my mom's grave and had a short conversation. Then I went and delivered my tale without a hitch. It was the right time and the right day to "come back." My own grave will be a lonely place.

Too late with the "I'm so sorry," because sometimes we get very tired of he hearing it, knowing they don't mean it.

I used to be that way. My teenage daughter was messing with drugs. She came home late one night. I was ready for a fight. But I paused and ask God, "What should I say?" Then I said if she would get angry and walk out the door I would still be her Daddy forevermore. I said, "I don't like what you are doing bit remember this, I am here for you and I will always love you." She held me and started to cry. She went to bed and NEVER stayed out late again. TRUE STORY! Amen!

It is increasingly difficult to come up with new ways to express my feelings for your writing. It always moves me. This little write is exquisite. You have my deepest respect.

As someone who has lost—though not a military man—certainly the man of my life, I can relate to the sense of loss and regret. Always wish I had said something more and done some things differently. Poignantly expressed, Danae. You certainly capture timeless grief.

With so many ways to express the honesty of military loss, this is a classic piece of wordsmithing to reveal the essence without false sentiment. Very well phrased and expressed with succinct emotions. Bravo.
