Put on a coat of heart felt feeling--It's Christmas

A Christmas to Love

Sometimes Christmas outfits are special it’s so true ,
This year I saw a lady dress her dog for Christmas too,

I though how very fortunate that little dog could be,
He loved that lady dearly, it was plain to see,

Good or Bad, rich or poor, devoted love was there,
You’re the God, of their world, your status they don’t care,

I thought how very special dog love can really feel
A devoted friend forever, their eyes always reveal,

This year I’ll miss Christmas, there’s no one home for me,
Wife has passed, family scattered, no reason for a tree,

Friends have asked me over, but it hurts my heart to stay,
I know they really mean well, but I’ll just be in the way,

As I watched that lady, a startling thought , Oh Gee !
Maybe I should get a puppy, a Christmas gift for me,

God that would be wonderful, but puppies cost a lot,
The Animal pound, won’t cost that much, I’ll see what they have got,

As I drove on into town, another thought would bring,
Christmas is for giving, not a personal pleasure thing,

As I arrived my mind was made, I knew just what to do,
The handler thought me crazy, said I don’t know about you,

I said I want the oldest, poorest and unwanted dog in here,
Mister you’re adopting, you’ll bring him back I fear,

We’ve got a bin of puppies and young dogs there are many,
You can have your pick of everyone, won’t cost another penny,

You say No? Well there he is, a mongrel mixed up hound,
He’s twelve years old I reckon that someone dropped in town,

He’s been here the longest. I just think it’s a crime,
You can see he’s just given up. He’s about ran out his time,

He came wagging for a hundred visitors, but they all passed him by,
Now he lies there in that corner, just waiting there to die,

I went into that holding pen, Four dogs came cheerfully,
Ol’hound never raised his head, didn’t even look at me,

I’ll never forget those saddest eyes that quickly turned so bright,
I hugged him close and said you’re going home with me tonight,

You’ll have a home forever, I’ll love you till the end,
You’re just what I needed, a loyal trusting friend,

Christmas eve, ol’Hound sleeping peaceful on my knee,
This has to be the greatest feeling Christmas ever gave to me.

So sweet of you to adopt a senior dog. That has crossed my mind too. Love is the best thing to give to someone - humans or animals - during Christmas. This is my type of Christmas story.

You touched hearts with this one. We had said, "Never again after the last baby dog had to be put down." I had my husband read this. It has been 6 years and I will be 71 the day after Christmas. It is time to give an old dog some love. Thank you for your kind heart.

Well, Tom, you've certainly nailed the theme to the cross, here. Very nicely crafted, indeed. However, as the extreme pessimist that I am, I feel compelled to place the below rejoinder. It is not in the slightest bit aimed at you, but rather towards humanity as a species! Personally and all poetics aside, I hope you have a very pleasant and fulfilling holiday!
----------------------------------

That Crappiest Time of the Year

That crappiest time has
Come once again
With Grinch-like regularity,
Never seeming to end!

With E-cards and well-wishes
From plumbers and auto dealers
And messages of false hope
From Christian Priest healers!

Buy this and buy that!
But don’t be a slacker!
Get enmired in deep debt
That’ll drive you near wacko!

Please STOP with the hope
And the optimism already,
And embrace grim reality
That assails us steady!

I’m so sick and tired
Of all the false sentiment
That I’m prompted to throw up
All that smarmy sediment!

So, spare me your blessings,
Your cheerful well-wishings,
And accept all my complaints
Of commercialised pitchings!

The real blessing of Christmas
I don’t hesitate to relay,
Is that one more year must pass
Before it comes BACK this way!

Since the day after it’s over,
All peacefulness ended,
We’ll be right back to killing,
With more cruelty rendered.

Therefore...to hell with humanity
And its monstrous excesses;
Bless the animals instead!
One of nature’s TRUE successes!

We know that all pets go to heaven.
And now, for sure, you just got your ticket through the Pearly Gates
also. What a great ending to a lousy year!

You know how to deliver on Christmas time! Your very best. Could be classic. If you don't mind, I will send it out to a few dog lovers of mine.

Hi Tom: That's a great feeling alright; all very altruistic, but set against this line:"Christmas is for giving, not a personal pleasure thing," seems a bit contradictory in view of your final couplet describing a picture of extreme pleasure at "ol'Hound sleeping peaceful on my knee"??? Looks like your sacrificial act at giving pleasure turned out to be giving pleasure to yourself.
Nevermind, forget about it all for taking ol'Hound off the hands of the pound-keeper, you did showup the "personal pleasure-seekers" who refused to welcome him into their homes.
Just one question: Is your generous act only applicable during Xmas time???
Okay, forget all the above cross-examination. Sorry to hear the persona's wife also "passed" away. Was he looking for company to replace her???
I think it would be best to ignore all the above and make ol'Hound work for his living by making him go catch a turkey or a hairy hare for Boxing Day, that is, if you paid to bring him home.
Watch out ol'Hounds can howl all night long and keep you up ... If you can't tame him, give him to Senor Don Ron for he has a little plucky growler who has been known to howl atavistically back to the wolf stage...
Have a nice Xmas Eve even if Eve has left home for good... Wignesan
