Rhonda and Michael, You are so sweet to be concerned about my husband, but I must confess--this poem is total FICTION! I was making up a card that would entertain my brother. You see, I try to send cards on time, but more often, they are late getting mailed. We often send crazy things to each other. I hope I am not going to be "in the doghouse." Thank you both.....Love you more!
Hey, Bro!
Just a little note --I think your birthday card is late.
I promise you I mailed it on the proper date;
I'd searched the rack and settled on a lovely birthday card;
Then purchased it and signed my name,
but dropped it in the yard.
Our dog leapt out from nowhere and grabbed it by the throat;
The way she started chewing it, you'd think she was a goat!
Well, finally, I wrested it from her fierce and awesome jaws,
Though it only took her one big swat to retrieve it with her paws.
She carried it out of the yard and trotted to the pond.
The frogs were hibernating there; (of paper, they're not fond.)
I thought she'd drop it with a splash, but no, she changed her mind,
So out I came a-pouncing to grab her from behind.
Just at that time, a big black crow was gliding down to rest;
He saw the card, engaged his beak, and took it to his nest.
I called Hubby with his ladder to climb up in the tree,
But when the crow began to flap, he fell and broke his knee!
The flapping caused a strong downdraft that sent the card to flying,
While Hubby, in pain, commenced to moan; you'd think that he was dying!
The card then landed close to him, and when I went to grab it,
I stumbled over the poor old dear and thus, I couldn't nab it.
While Hubby was being loaded--in an ambulance--with a frown,
The card blew up on the shiny hood and hitched a ride right down
To the bottom of the driveway, close to the mailbox,
And I hollered, "Put it in there, please.
Oh, thank you, Sir --You rock!"
So Brother Dear, I hope you will appreciate it all.
Visiting hours are 6 to 8, in case you want to call.
Happy belated Birthday!
Your loving Sister,
p.s. Hubby's knee is mending well; he should be discharged as soon as they can unhook him from the traction thingamajig.
As a poet, I know you don't send greeting cards. They are for amateurs. We poets send original poetry, by email now. So it's safe from all the animals. Except of course that little message… "That email address doesn't exist." or "The email address you sent this to is blocking you, sorry."
Ron

Peace be with you
William
I have cousins that I enjoy doing this kind of thing with. And they seem to get a kick out of doing it as well. You are such a clever person, Connie. I always enjoy reading your poetry. I’m sure your brother appreciates the special effort you take to remember him.
