This is about Mom's favorite chair

There it stood, where Mama would always sit
A chair so huge, old and ugly
For Mama though, it was a perfect fit.

It was falling apart, the seat had turned brown
The outside was worn and torn,
This didn’t matter, it was the place where Mama sat down.

We told her it was ugly and would have to go
But Mama said it belonged to her
And to give it up, well, heck no!

Mama would rock so content
How she loved that ugly thing
It’s arms all torn and rent.

Seeing her so happy like that,
Although the chair was ugly,
With Mama so happy
We all just had to muffle a laugh

But one day the chair rocked no more
It sat there so still, so empty and sad
Because Mama you see, had gone to the Lord.

And I know somewhere in heaven,
Sits a chair so ugly and brown
With an angel sitting there
The angel is Mama, and as everyone knows
In that chair is now where Mama sits down.

In loving memory of Elizabeth “Betty” Schlee

Such a wonderfully poignant poem about your mother and your memory of her, always in that favorite chair. My mother died early this year and always was in her latest model of La-Z-Boy reclining chair. They are so ubiquitous these days, that they don't have the meaning those older favorite chairs had.

My sister has my grandfather, my mother's father, unique wooden reclining rocking chair. Its frame and rocking mechanism was sturdy cast iron. The seat back, seat and leg rests are wood slats with the central portion of each covered with leather filled with about 1/2 inch of padding material. I don't know where my grandfather got it… Probably from a rich man's estate auction or it was given to him by one of the many people he worked for, not having Social Security.

I do remember my grandfather sitting in that chair and him rocking in it. Made him look rich.

That ugly chair was beautified when your mother sitting in it. I think the chair must have held a lot of good memories for her and she loved it just the way it was.
