Be careful what you write. Someday you may have to read it.

Chicken Scratchin’s

I went to the store this morning

To do my weekly shop

I started working down the list

But then I had to stop

I couldn’t read my writing

A chicken crossed the page

And did a bunch of scratching

Like in a steroid rage

Of course the chicken’s fiction

The blame is all on me

The list’s unreadable diction

Is fully penmanship free

So I looked at my Doc’s prescription

The handwriting looked the same

Then I went over to the pharmacy

And handed him the list in shame

He said I wrote tomatoes

And soup and peas and salad

How he knew I had no clue

And I wrote that shopping ballad

So now I vow to spend more time

When I make my list of gruel

I found it too embarrassing

To be shopping like a fool

I know the feelin all too well, so now I carry around several pairs of reading glasses. (And even with them, I sometimes can't make out my chicken scratches. And my wife's scratchin, is worse than mine!)

YOU KNOW THIS POEM REALLY HITS HOME...NOT SO MUCH WITH A SHOPPING LIST BUT SOMETIMES I GET INSPIRATIONS WHILE I AM OUT AND ABOUT AND BY THE TIME I REACH HOME AND ATTEMPT TO TRANSPOSE....IT IS DIFFICULT...TO SAY THE LEAST. WHAT CAN I SAY...WHEN THE INSPIRATIONS ARE FLOWING...THEY ARE FLOWING AND I THANK THE LORD THAT HE ALWAYS STEPS IN AND MAKES IT CLEAR WHAT HE WANTS ME TO WRITE. EXCELLENT WORK HERE...THE RHYME SCHEME AND RHYTHM IS VERY GOOD. THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS. JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I have found my writing to be the same way especially since the advent of the keyboard. This is really well done and humorous. Enjoyed this immensely.

Why not have a little fun when we write? Great job, Patrick.

This was a well written poem. Each stanza flowed and I didn't detect any excess words. Though under the second stanza "Steroid Rage", didn't seem to flow. It could just me. I am not a poet. I wish to be one, like you, and capture feeling, but alas, I am a short story writer;)
