Renderings of the Worm

This was inspired(?) by a poem that Annabel Sheila wrote, "Resting Place." As is customary, I must apologize for subject abuse.

Poem Artwork

Bones and stones and boxes

Peaceful nonetheless

A gathering of the fallen

Collectively confess

I should have been an actor

I should have been a cop

I should have been a teacher

I should have known when to stop

I should have learned to love more

I should have taken time

Though I enjoy your company

The view forgoes sublime

Oh sure it’s pretty topside

With gorgeous planted berms

But down here in these quarters

We wrestle with the worms

Of course the worms are winning

As worms are prone to do

It’s how Nature returns the favor

The ultimate joke’s on you

Life’s not always gloom and doom

Life’s not always fair

But it’s better than the alternative

That six feet of soil brings to bear

But is the alternative of jail better than "six feet of soil", OR is "six feet of soil" better than jail?

Sage

You're a funny man Patrick, I laughed the first time and then thought about the wisdom of your words, double the value friend!

One of a kind, original gem!
(Perhaps I should have eaten breakfast before reading, though! Ha.)

TOTALLY BRILLIANT and far from subject abuse, it seems to me. This has a light-hearted feel but really casues me to reflect on how precious it is to STILL be perched precariously above instead of six feet under God's green earth and I think you have crafted the balance and attitude of this poem EXQUISITELY, Patrick. Pat yourself on the back - this sort of success is hard to pull of when it grapples with such delicacies, but you do so with great panache and aplomb. Much appreciated, thanks! :)) xx

I really like worms; they do wonders in my garden. But Alas, I've left my wife instructions to cremate my remains, and to periodically sprinkle a few of my ashes in our many cat litter boxes so my felines know I'm still around.
