Don’t Mourn the US Post Office’s Demise

I used to have huge respect for the institution and its employees. Then the mail started showing up about 5:30 pm instead of noon. Then I started getting my neighbor’s mail, and them mine. Nothing important, just stuff like mortgage bills. And then this…..

Poem Artwork

·         May 1….our community mailbox (for 7 homes) is knocked over

·         May 2…Mail service ceases

·         May 7…The post office advises us that mail service has ceased till box is fixed

·         May 9..Begin picking up our mail at the post office, no news on repair of box

·         May 10…Post Office thinks we own the box and won’t fix it

·         May 14…Scrounge around my files and find 20 year old documentation proving the box belongs to post office

·         May 15….The post office is presented with the documentation which they acknowledge

·         May 16…A repair work order is issued by post office

·         May 17…After constant bitching by the 7 residents, post office resumes delivery to individual homes dropping it on the porch in an open cardboard box. Accurate mail sorting remains an issue.

·         June 6…Today, 37 days later, no mailbox and no idea when it will be back.

·         I now actually hate the post office and am in the process of converting to on-line bill paying. See ya Mr. Postman.

Neither rain nor sleet nor snow

My Ass

Please forgive me if I sound crass

The simple act of delivering mail

That I once joked at being snail

With safe arrival a reasonable bet

Instead we now play postal roulette

It’s just my mortgage what the hell

And my neighbor’s electric bill gee that’s swell

When he misplaced my insurance, I was stunned

But it worked out fine I had his tax refund

Maybe sometime before the post office dissolves

Into the email world that very quickly revolves

I can go to the mailbox and pick up my mail

I’m not holding my breath, I expect them to fail

wow sorry to hear this Patrick
here in my area our postmaster has closed down some drop boxes
since people are not using them, and too with all the cyber mail
eventually post offices may become a thing of the past like pay phones and drive in theaters and shoe repair shops and used book stores :( sigh...

sadly so much of this is true-they are considering closing our little PO which actually does a good job!

You make some very valid points, Patrick. It is the same thing here. The price of postage stamps keeps going up on a very regular basis as the service deteriorates. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Regis

Good write on the Post Office. Give it ALL to private enterprise. I am reading stories about the early thirties when people chipped in and bought fire trucks and all took turns manning the fort. Now the Fire Departments are run like auto unions. Expectant whiners and nanny state children are what we are raising as a nation. Thank God we have a few exceptions but they are getting fewer and harder to find. God help the USA!

I mourn the occasional letter with the handwritten word. I mourn the day the mail came and contained no coupons or ads or other junk and all.

My brother will mourn because his wife is a post mistress.

But snail mail has become too slow, too expensive, and too unreliable for the likes of us instant gratification multitasking junkies.

I'd be LMAO if this weren't so damn true. Never-the-less, you've carved out another masterpiece here, Mr. Granfors. Fun stuff to read, but not much fun to live. Dick

Same thing here....I pay all my bills online...have been for years...it's way less frustrating than depending on the postal service....good luck with your mail box, Patrick...

Back in 1990, the Government seized the Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada for tax evasion and, as required by law, tried to run it. They failed and it closed.
Now we are trusting the economy of our country, the banking system, General Motors and nationalized health care to the same nit-wits who couldn't make money running a whore house and selling whiskey!"

And we can add, "The U.S.Postal Service"

Agree one hundred percent. I have seen the mail delivered here at nearly seven o'clock in the afternoon. Unions. Unions. Unions!
