The Walker And The Monarch Butterfly
~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~
Upon my morning leisure walk
I came across
A monarch butterfly
It buzzed around my head
Several times
Landed near me on the Road
I walked upon.
Her beauty intrigued me
Slowly I reached
For my cell phone
Setting the camera
Before moving towards
My target of interest.
As I aimed
Ready to complete my
Intended action
It flew away
Laughing at me
Within my head
Ha! Ha! It said
Catch me if you can.
Buzzing around me
Once again
landing on the road
I moved in more Cautiously
Snapping a few pictures.
Thanking it as I continued
Upon the road to my journey.
It followed me
Slowly flopping it's wings
Perching atop my hat
It asked me
May I have your permission
To rest here kind sir?
By all means you are welcome
You may accompany me
On my travels
It would be an honor for me
To have your highness
As a fellow traveler.
Thank you kind sir
It said to me, my wings flop not
As they once did when I was younger
After peeling myself free
From the Cocoon
That once incarcerated
Me within.
I've seen all there is
Within my world.
Sow my oats And spread my seeds
As for you kind sir
When I breath My last breath
I will sigh your name
Before I cease to exists.
Upon my arrival I removed my hat
And to my surprise
Perched he still was
Motionless Staring into infinity
I though I heard someone
Whispering my name
“The Walker”
Truly a lovely offering, William. Who would not love a butterfly; particularly the one you have introduced to your readers via your verses. Thank you! Love and peace to you,
When I write I see myself in what I see and feel and as the cocoon opens up the beauty of the poem emerges and the story grows to a butterfly with wings...
You my friend have expressed this in an artform that is hard for some to do.
Thank you for pollinating my mind with words of beauty!!
Still seeing the butterfly in my mind...
An enchanting and wonderful poem that would intrigue almost anyone, but especially, children.
On a side note, that butterfly does not appear to be a monarch, but one of the many butterflies that mimicked the monarch's look. The monarch butterfly feeds on milkweed and gathers from its sap a poison that is deadly to birds. That's why birds tend not to bother eating monarch butterflies. And also why other butterflies mimic them.
Sadly, monarch butterflies are on the decline. Farmers are finding many new herbicides to kill off unwanted species like dandelions, Canadian thistles, and milkweed. Thus killing off butterfly habitat and food source.
A book of nature inspired poems and essays, written from the heart and soul of a life-long nature, animal, and wilderness lover, and dedicated to today’s children - Earth's only hope for a better tomorrow.
