Look at these eyes
Eyes of hope and joy
Eyes of a little child
The eyes of innocence
They are the eyes of Maria
Fleeing from conflict and dissension
Seeking shelter and protection
Peace and love are what they know
Serenity is the language they speak
Tranquility is their subtle communication
Understanding is the thread of their ingenuity
But Somalia had offered them insecurity
They are now on their way to a refugee camp
What will they expect to see there?
A joyless environment with no one to play with
Or an atmosphere bursting with tremendous bliss?
Agencies taking good care of refugee children?
Or agencies leaving children in the hands of neglect?
Will her humble eyes be staring at an empty horizon
Or will they find light at the end of the tunnel?
Will the dark clouds on her sky linger longer
Or will there be winds that drive them away?
Let’s wait and see
