Prometheus, seeing humans in the cold,
Went to Hephaestus’ forge to steal the flame
And put it in a hollow reed to hold.
Then to the people of the Earth He came.
“Behold! The Fire of the Gods!” He cried.
“Take care of it, and it will warm you well.
Use wood that’s fallen from the tree and died,
But do not cut the green wood. Now, farewell,”
Prometheus said, and vanished. Ah, but then,
Well-fed and warm, men thought they wanted more -
And cut the living forest down, and when
The trees were gone, in horror now they swore:
Twas not their fault! Prometheus should be chained.
Their land was by his gift of Fire profaned.

This reminds me of the people living in Madagascar - the rivers run red into the Ocean because of erosion...they have demolished entire forests! Good write.
