LIGHT OF THE SOUL

By John Herlihy

The long years now seem short

In this adventurous, precious life.

The passing days take their time

Or fly on nimble winged feet.

The lithe, young body grows old,

But the spirit stays ever young.

As the body breathes in, breathes out,

The spirit heaves as a bellows, empty, then full.

The chance to rest remains a dream with promise,

An abiding peace will bring forth lasting cure.

The days are there to steal away my patience,

The nights hold treachery to shadow my hopes.

No one knows where their choices take them,

Some things in life are better not to know.

As life goes on, I am still adrift on an open sea,

In the open sky overhead, wild geese fly free.

They fly in the wind, their cries to leave behind,

On the horizon, the gathering clouds promise rain.

Time’s arrow passes with my life in its wake,

Minutes, hours and days voyage with the sun.

My life in the hands of a Master Wood Carver,

The wood shavings cast shadows as they fall.

Hardship and toil whittle my kindness from me,

The purest part left behind, not stolen or broken,

Light shines from the brave soul in solitary ray.

I AGREE. THE LIGHT OF THE SOUL, THE VERY BREATH OF LIFE FROM THE 'MASTER WOOD CARVER' REMAINS THE SAME ALWAYS AND WILL NEVER DIE. IT IS THE HOUSE OF CLAY THAT IT IS HOUSED IN THAT WILL SURELY DECAY AND ROT. HOWEVER, AS FAR AS OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR MAKER IS CONCERNED, IT'S ONLY THE SOUL THAT HE WANTS ANYWAY...HE REALLY ISN'T INTERESTED IN THE APPEARANCE OF THE BODY AT ALL. HE GAVE US WHAT WE NEEDED, BECAUSE WE COULDN'T SEE THE SOUL AND ASSURED US THAT WE WERE MADE IN HIS IMAGE. THE BREATH/LIGHT OF THE SOUL IS WHAT IS KEEPING US FROM DAY TO DAY. AND IN THE END...THE SOUL'S LIGHT IS WHAT WILL TRANSPORT US TO OUR ETERNAL HOME AND, FOR US AGAIN, ALSO OUR IMMORTAL(CHANGED) BODIES. BRAVE SOUL, INDEED...SO UNLIKE US, YET SO MUCH A PART OF US. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Such a wonderful feeling you impart to your readers! We are alive as long as we are alive so we live! "Free and easy. That's my style......." Barbara Streisand........Your words are like a gust of wind that lets up briefly and then swoops back up! 'Love this!!

Love ya!

Could not agree any more with what has already been said. However, within this poem lies the poets' heart and soul. It is there in each and every line.

"As life goes on, I am still adrift on an open sea," Yesss!

Excellent. Those last two stanzas are perfect.

Our hardship helps shaped most of us. We hold the chisel in our hands and carve our life's journey.

"Hardship and toil whittle my kindness from me," For some, hardship and toil increases their kindness.
