How does a dog know what filet mignon tastes like,

What does a dog know about pizza, plain or pepperoni,

We buy treats because they appeal to us,

Anything more we tell ourselves is just so much baloney…

Kibbles and bits advertises burgers and cheese,

The most dogs know is that a bite comes from fleas,

And that smells come in on a windy breeze,

But to tell which is a burger and which is cheese,

The advertisers do it so that we are teased…

Dog food has great nutritional value,

Or so does say the manufacturer,

How can WE prove this, dogs eat cause they are hungry,

Not for nutritional value, taste or likewise,

Food for dogs or cats for that matter are produced under a guise…

I don't know about Rufuz, but my dogs always loved to get into the garbage, the older the better. Dogs eat because they are dogs and there is food. I do think they must be able to distinguish flavor, though, because I had a dog once who hated peas. She gulped her food, would empty a bowl with lightning speed, but if I mixed three peas in her food, I would find them in the bottom of the bowl completely clean. You are right though, the foods are made to appeal to our tastes since we are the ones that the marketing is done for. I was looking at cat food the other day and found grilled lobster....geezzz how many lobsters have warf cats caught, grilled and eaten???
Take care,
Sherry

Some very absolute points you make, Ed.
Do our pets REALLY understand TV commercials?? NO...guess who they are displayed for :o)

My two once-feral cats do prefer fowl (chicken), so I think they've tasted of a few birds in their wild days; while my house-cats really prefer a fish meal. That is until I once-in-a-blue-moon fry some bacon; that aroma works on them worse than catnip!

You strike, and make a point well taken daddy human. An intelligent write.

I believe it is the human who superimposes on the animal what they think the animal will like based on personal preference. I can see Rufus grinning as he chomps on the filet. (-:

I fully agree with you Ed. Amuses me also to see all the gourmet cat food. Amazing eh, gourmet food for cats yet there are starving human beings who would be grateful for a handful of rice. Strange world indeed.

All appeals to the owners since we know the different flavors. I don't think animals would sellect any of these items IF they could read. Silly commercialism and it'll work too.

Ed, Be careful don't bite the hand that feeds you .. you may come back as a dog. On second thought, maybe you were a dog and came back as you.

The Wholly Book of Genesis by Jay Dubya

The Wholly Book of Genesis is a humorous satire on the first book of the Old Testament where the Story of Creation, the building of Noah's Ark, Sodom and Gomorrah and the families of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are thoroughly spoofed and broadsided.
