You know, Ed... ...you are way ahead of where I am at. I have yet to own a "smartphone" or any kind of mobile phone for that matter. I am starting to feel the pressure though. I've been putting it off because things like my landline phones and my camera and such do so much it takes days to learn it all... ...and I've got better things to do with my time. Technology waits for no man. Recent upgrades for computers and computer devices like smartphones have been all about interconnectivity between devices and security. Both are a pain in the ass, and complicate simple use of the devices.
In a way, the Cloud is better, because, eventually no one will ever have to download applications or save contacts or even personal data because it will all be saved automatically and readily available to all devices. Like John, I still have a desktop phone and do all of my work on my computers. I don't miss texting or constantly having to keep up with or pay for phone providers and phones.
I save myself the trouble. I have never bought a cell phone. I was given an old Nokia phone when I took up a new position a few years ago, but there was nothing to do, just make and receive calls which I still do, sparingly. Otherwise, I work (write) on the computer NOT the smart phone. I kid my students (who try to get me to buy one) that by that that, the technology will be obsolete and we will be interacting with the air (and cloud) like Iron Man does in his mansion. When you want to close a file, just whisk your hand away. John
