Not crude. But you certainly were killing Rufus with kindness like so many well-meaning pet owners feeding dogs human food. I never gave Jazz anything other than his dry dog food in ample supply so that he could eat whenever he wanted but was hungry (often about 3 AM I would hear him crunching away) and a daily dog biscuit for his teeth. He was really healthy and frisky in his old age when he was attacked and killed. Better to die of sudden attack rather than months of pain and misery before being put to sleep by a vet.
