The iconic boy, the children of Syria, the children of Aleppo, the plight of those who escape.
Aleppo strikes the child
Of concrete dust and blood.
He raises his hand,
Feels the warmth on his forehead.
Shock, not yet knowing
His orphaned life, siblings gone.
The innocent made to pay
For one man’s evil.
To crush all who would
Challenge his power, or be in his way.
That steel fist of ego and hate;
That sociopath’s desire
To make others his horses and pawns,
That he, the king, cannot rule without.
Those smaller than pawns
Do not understand.
Why must families die?
They migrate in hundreds of thousands,
Drowning in treacherous waters.
Nations begrudgingly letting them pass through
Or else stay in temporary camps.
A few taking refugees, but not enough.
As Merkel catches heat for opening borders
And supremacists march in the streets
And mothers and fathers worry
Which marketplace will be next.
Americans overwhelmingly distrust Muslims,
Assuming they might be terrorists
Though the process will take years
And Trump rides in on fear and fairytales.
Back in Syria,
As getaways continue,
The little boys and girls
Think it’s an adventure.
The teens know it’s forever,
Adults before their time.
No more school, friends, or hope,
Though more hope than dying in rubble.
Travelers’ phones die,
No electricity on path or berth
In tiny flimsy boats.
No one to record the dangers;
No one to weep with them
Until it’s too late.
No water after meager supplies run out,
As their packing was light,
Survivor’s shedding.
Fear hastening every step,
A marker writes on a little backpack
For identification.
Not preempting theft or confusion,
But a stolen life’s badge.
The sun and the cold,
The wretched bodies camping out,
No place for hygiene,
Forgetting that it ever mattered.
Eyes retreat into black holes,
Skulls-in-waiting.
Who will love them,
The forgotten ones?
The solemn trudge of death is indifference,
The seasons of
Autocrat genocide,
Pummeling hope,
By dictatorship madness.
You have painted the scene right out of Armageddon. Such a loss that seems to be occurring in other places as well, not so vividly portrayed by social media.
I recall another tyrant, Saddam Hussein. We tried to eliminate him with "shock and awe" in Baghdad that led to tremendous "collateral damage" but did not touch him or his family until we were in a prolonged and much more deadly war that also forced many people to flee for their lives while "foreign fighters" poured in from all sides to plunder and take advantage.
The resistance to Assad was winning in spite of the gas attack until ISIS formed from the Iraqi debacle and took advantage of Syria's situation. Now, assassinations are quite common. Perhaps the only thing that can stop the Assad regime would be some well-planned assassinations. The attack on Qaddafi that killed some of his family eventually weekend his iron hold on his people.
I have never known a dentist who was a killer
A callously cold and inhumane bastard
who would and did suck the wealth from his country
and then methodically snuff the lives of those in his care
especially women and children who have no defenses.
What sort of evil SOB could reach into the depths of hell
and summon the means to commit such atrocities.
Where are the half dozen well-placed cruise missiles
that can end his madness?
Having had the picture you use haunting me as well, your treatise of just how painful certain people's legacy can be to others is a another reminder of how insanity rules, while sanity runs, dodges, seeks shelter, asylums et al. Will it ever end in our lifetimes?
The Star Seekers is a humorous, fast-paced adventure and a heartwarming story for anyone who has ever looked at the stars and wanted to venture out there.
Goldie's daughter Chili Pepper leaves the Flirting With Food TV show & moves to Portland Oregon as Executive Chef at a new restaurant. But there is a rash of murders, all in the Pettygrove mansion where she lives with roommates.
