You are absolutely right. For the few that have tried the ultimate freedom of "living off the land," most have quit for an easier way to live under civilization. But under civilization, freedom is hemmed in by rules created by leaders who are not often motivated by good ideals, mostly by greed and power, the two elements of control that religion provides in spades.
No one is free. If left to ones wits in the wilderness, most people would die of thirst, hypothermia or hyperthermia, dehydration, illness, starvation or predator within as little as three weeks. Why we live in relative ease in restrictive civilization with all of our wants and needs taken care of by our bargain with the devil, religion.
