War, through the eyes of a child.

Poem Artwork

A small boy huddles

in a doorway…

peeking through dirty fingers

at the rocket’s red glare…

splays of crimson

spattering like blood,

showering his village with fire…

unable to comprehend

why adults go to war.

All around him the wails,

anguished howls,

piercing screams,

barely audible

over the relentless blasts.

The innocent…

the ordinary…

united in grief,

and in death.

A veil of bullets

pelting, pinging

the walls,

the cars,

his neighbors,

his dog,

his mother...

his father, brave and strong…

resting in the ground,

or lying in the street.

Amongst the rubble,

a crackling blaze

and the disquieting odor

of burning flesh.

All who loved him are gone.

Shivering with cold and fear,

his tummy rumbles.

Sucking his thumb…

his only meal today…

he can’t decide

what hurts most of all…

his empty belly…

or his breaking heart.

This one is heart-wrenching. Unless we are there, we can't even begin to imagine the feelings of the despairs, the horrors and the fears that were held within the tiny innocent souls.

A gut-wrenching write.

War is far worse than hell as so many are hurt that don't even understand why. If you end up in hell it is because of the life you lived here but sad that those trying to live a good life end up in hell here on earth,
Thanks for this one and maybe one day we will not have to see this that of life or pictures

A truly hearbreaking write and picture, Michelle, and sadly, something far too many children have had to endure throughout the entire bloody history of mankind.

Dear Michelle,
This is a powerfully touching poem and it went straight to the very core of me. Children should never have to see these things, never have to experience these things and never have to carry these things in their little hearts. Bless you for writing this poem. I hope it opens eyes to the horrors of war. Children are the innocent casualties.

Michelle, they say a picture speaks a thousand words, yet this piece will continue to speak long after we’re all gone. War is Hell! There is no doubt about it. Hopefully all this bloodshed will end soon, and the world will be able to hold its head up high again. I agree with everything said thus far, my friend, especially whenever the One makes a visit to our spinning planet, all this will stop! If mankind would only put as much effort into the positive things that need to be done then I believe, that all the unnecessary bloodshed will disappear once and for all. Very powerful write, Poet! Thanks for sharing it. Take care and be well.

Oh yes, all those innocents being slaughtered... "collateral damage" to use the military term... Any abuse of might is a crime against humanity at large. Taking the long view, Ed is on target, PEACE is the only way to go... Very well penned, Michelle. Thank you!

A truly sad pen Michelle. Words that truly describe the true casualties of war. Unfortunately peace is something only achieved when one more powerful than mortal man displays his presence. Then all will fear the wrath of just one.No longer will man play "king of the mountain" but will become the mountain together.
