Dorothy Frances Gurney:
The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God's heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth. "Garden Thoughts"
..................................................................................
I spent some quality time in the garden
tilling and turning the friable and rich soil
making sure the life giving earth
was aerated and incorporated with fertiliser
a little red robin, perched on my spade handle
and observed me with curiosity and impudence
watching me closely, to learn my modus operandi
as I realized with perception and insight
there are many phases in life
with no guarantees or promises of certainty
I staked up the hybrid tea roses
securing their ties and bonds
protecting them from the winds of change and damage
settling in, to a slow and unhurried pace and rhythm
just then an earthworm wriggled to the surface
plowing a solo and lone furrow
more than likely I thought to myself
the best course and option available to us all
and as a son of the soil
a tradesman always cleans and polishes
his tools and implements after use
making sure that rust and corrosion
don't spoil and mar tomorrow's plans
I turned and tended diligently
the little section of nettles and thistlrs
that I preserve for the butterlies and moths
to lay and nurture their eggs from predators
in time for next year's cycle of regeneration
to initiate n miraculous revival and return
knowing full well, that time and fortune
take their heavy toll on schemes and things
and as I surveyed and scrutinised the finished article
the professional work and labor accomplished
I counted my latent blessings and assets
that I still have health and vigor in full measure

The garden has long been my salvation. I tend to lose all track of time there, and , like you, take pleasure in the labor of the heart. I gatherered seeds from daylillies where I was working this weekend knowing they would be ignored there, but flower if tended in my space.
This garden and this poem have Peter Paton written all over them!

is graciously and enchantingly conveyed here. A delicate hand
and heart tends the soil and plants, while a keen mind and deeply
introspective soul emanates care, warmth and a subtly spiritual
stweradship and guardianship of blessings and beauties we behold
and cherish. Fantastic writing here Peter, so enjoyable! I love
your garden!
In my estimation, each poem is a multifaceted jewel, which you have diligently carved out, then polished...to a high-gloss finish.
Your garden is no exception...being equally as beautiful, as the others.

The theme of regeneration and cultivation resonates throughout this beautiful poem...the earthy qualities of life continuing are strong and vivid. So often robins are associated only with Christmas (perhaps a pertinent time given your theme here) yet I have two in my garden who continuously seem to be curious, inquisitive and more 'cheeky' as seasons change. As ever Peter this is just lovely.
