It seems no matter what, we all end up in some kind of war, fighting over an issue or cause, no one seeking a middle ground, preferring to go to war, just to have it their way.

You declared that you have stopped watching the news. That's sad. I watch the mainstream news ABC, NBC and CBS. I also watch CBS Sunday Morning and CBS 60 Minutes. Good things are reported there every day. In all my years of asking for help from strangers, even in very bad neighborhoods, people always responded with loving care to help me. I don't watch self-proclaimed political experts wrangle over what politicians are doing over and over, but I do see both good and bad by the news. Remember the good far outweighs the bad.

I agree with you about cell phones and interpersonal conversation and connection. But young people are starved for love from their hard-working, but under compensated, parents and find connection with people in far-flung locations with no long-distance fees like we had to pay. My grandmother played solitaire every night to kill time and I play solitaire every night on my computer watching sometimes boring TV shows at the same time. Kids play games too, on their cell phones. Even crossword puzzles. Hopefully just pastimes like my grandmother and me.

I think your problem is immediacy. Whereas in your youth in the last century, the news you got was not covered like it is today where everyone with a cell phone taking a video is a potential news reporter. In those days, reporters were dispatched to distant places, but local cases of wrongdoing often didn't make national news. But the impeachment of Richard Nixon was as well reported as the current impeachment of Donald Trump. Anyone with a critical eye can discern that Donald Trump has done numerous acts (some openly on television and many in his often vile tweets) that qualify for impeachment under the Constitution. He sets the tone of disrespect that should be intolerable.

If you compare the first 20 years of the 20th century with the 21st, I believe you will find that period was far less peaceful than this century. Use a critical eye, not your gut feeling. Your current life is quite sheltered in your enclave of retired people. Get out into the Miami communities and help the poor on the street. You will learn something about peace in this world like Mother Teresa. Maybe even get a Nobel Peace Prize.
