After I wrote this, I realized it’s a common parody theme…

 Christmas Hangover

T'was the day after Christmas,
and all through the house,
not a creature was stirring,
not even the drunken louse.

The wrappings were spread,
here and there 'cross the room,
no one to pick them up,
everyone asleep until noon.

The tree was a shambles,
where the cat had played,
in a grotesque arrangement
trimmings everywhere disarrayed.

The turkey, half eaten,
still on the counter.
Repulsive to all,
except the furry pouncer.

The stockings were strewn,
by the bedside without care,
to bed went the parents,
children entering, beware!

The children all anxious,
to go outside and play,
opened the stale cereal boxes,
their sugar shock for the day.

The house decoration lights,
glowed in the midmorning sun,
all covered over with ice,
a frozen rain that had come.

And then from the kitchen,
there arose such a clatter,
the dog got the turkey,
sweet dreams to shatter.

Mom and Pop got up, still in a trance,
looked around the house they had to clean,
chased kids and pets out the door,
none of that chatter, just the football score.

In a moment as swift as the wink of an eye,
the sun went down in a bleary red sky.
Another Christmas over,
good riddance, and bye-bye.

Ho Ho Ho
Santa Claus here
You might have done better
If you'd left me a beer

Stale cookies and milk
Of that I am tired
I stopped at a meth house
And now I am wired

I'm sick of looking
Up my reindeer's fat asses
Just for delivering
My gifts to the masses

So don't be surprised
If next year I don't show
I'll be in Miami
I am sick of the snow

Memories. Smiling and jolly as I read this memoir, perhaps, some trouble to live to create memories, but wisely said, that good riddance and good-bye, but that later we want it back again, just sanitized in our minds.

Funny stuff!

Reminds me of my house after Christmas. Love the line about the cat. Ours uses our tree as a scratching post lol

Why are we so addicted and driven by the mind-numbing madness of this farce? Perhaps because we are either too lazy or too cowardly to do it differently and buck the pressure to conform. I'd read this and weep - if it weren't so darned funny and well-written! Here's to the next time and Happy New Year! :) xx

Reading these words and remembering the movie "A Christmas Story" made me laugh! I especially liked the part about the cats! One Christmas week I heard noices in the living room and Midnight(my cat) was up in the tree hiding behind the limbs, and all I saw were her eyes blinking at me. She played more that year with the tree and the ornaments than a little baby.

Thank you for bringing back in my mind, some cute memories of Christmas!

Each year seems to provide further reason to ban the day. Your poem should be posted at Thanksgiving as a prophetic omen. Well done.

Love it, Ron. It's just as you say - all chaos and impending doom.
I managed to avoid most of that this year - Lucky me!

Captured it for the chaos it is, Ron...when the wrapping comes off, it is a mess, and then they start next year's chaos all over at the after Christmas sales. Logic. Go figure. Think Chevy Chase said it best in Christmas Vacation.

As from a mom's point of view, days like that create nothing but extra work for mom, just like the picnics we used to go on up the mountain, we had fun and fished and played and got filthy, mom made the chicken, potato salad, cupcakes, and all the condiments and then had to go home and wash all the camping clothes and take care of the picnic cleanup and still cook supper for all. Wonder why she did not have fun like us?
