If you haven't heard a mockingbird sing in the early morning spring, you're missing a real treat.

Mockingbird

She's a native Texan, through and through,

she's everywhere the sagebrush grew.

But she's also at home in the suburbs, too,

with a territory for a nest or two for two.

She guards her territory and her nest,

from humans, dogs, cats and the rest.

She's a fierce fighter and gives no quarter,

for any other mockingbird that's out of order.

She sings some of the songs of other birds, too,

but her suitor sings more than double her few.

He wants her to be his only true adore,

he's tending her chicks; she's looking for more.

Bugs and berries are her favorite eats,

red berries of asparagus fern real treats.

While she won't let a bug or worm get away,

she'll pass up the birdfeeder every single day.

There is a hawk in the neighborhood these days,

she'd better be alert and know of her crafty ways..

Or she will be gone like the sparrows, too soon,

just left the nest, learned to fly and suddenly, doom!

THIS SHARING IS WONDERFUL! I ENJOY THEIR EARLY MORNING ARIAS HEARD FROM THE TREES OUTSIDE MY 8TH FLOOR APARTMENT WINDOW BUT I'M REALLY NOT INTO BIRDS, HOWEVER...FROM THIS POST I LEARNED A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE MOCKINGBIRD. ENJOYED, THANKS A LOT. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Around here they call them "cat birds" because they do such a marvelous job of imitating felines. How many times as a kid did I go looking for the "lost kitten" because of the very vocal cat bird?

They can certainly imitate other sounds very well. An intriguing and beautifully voiced creature. Enjoyed the insight. r

You are so right. The mockingbird sings the sweetest tune ever heard. A common aspect of nature beautifully and uniquely described. You outdid yourself on this one. Love the little details that you are so renowned for.

I love how they sing. My husband knows so many different birds calling songs because I'll ask him and he knows the mockingbird. I have not seen one here in a while. We get a lot of cardinals, blue jays and Tennessee blue birds here in Tennessee. Beautiful write, Ron and thank you for this inspiration and I love how they are always so happy no matter what. You know as a matter of fact all birds seem so happy in all circumstance, sleet, rain, snow, winds, you name it. Maybe we humans can learn a lot about life watching birds and being happily content !

Nicely done Ron, this litte bird has been the inspiration of poets, story tellers and composers for centuries and you captured his spirit quite well.

Ron, I love this poem, it is beautiful. A few years ago we had a Mockingbird serenate us all night long. His repertoire was quite extensive. Thank you so much for sharing.

Ron, real nice poem about the old Mockingbird. Birds are real special, makes me want to have one. A parrot would be so cool. Take care pal...Dennis

Love the bit of irony at the end. I have one of those little things that visits often in the summer. They are a delight.
