I bid adieu to the day

As the sun slowly sinks

Beyond the far hills.

With a final defiant flare

Of purples, red and orange,

The light soon fades

And the first stars appear

In ever increasing numbers.

Somewhere

In the near pasture

A whippoorwill calls

To the encroaching night

And in the distant trees

An owl whoos in response,

While from the dampening grass

Fireflies begin to rise,

Their tails flickering

Like small specks

Of left over daylight.

Soon, I will go indoors

And settle in

For an evening of TV,

But not yet,

Not just yet,

For now I will sit

And sway quietly

In the porch swing,

Allowing the peace

Of the night

To gently wrap itself

Around me.
