Laugh, if you will,
Until tears trace
Down your cheeks,
Until your belly hurts,
Until you can no longer
Draw your breath.
Laugh at the depravity,
The sickness
Of one without heart,
Who found humor
In the death of
God's innocence,
Who cannot
Or will not
See the waste
Of the life
Left lying
On the side
Of a road.
To mock the corpse
Of a deer,
Or a dog,
Or a cat,
Or any creature,
Is, in my mind,
The highest of heresy,
For though they may not
Have been human,
They once possessed life
And were precious
In the eyes of God,
And to those of us
Who saw them as

Never forget how badly I felt when I killed two squirrels climbing into the Cascades on my way to California in 1966. Never killed another squirrel in my life of driving. But a few years ago I dodged one and ended up cutting attire badly on a sharp curb and ending up on the doorstep of a house--a close call.
Very straightforward and directly to the point. And I like the point of this poem very much.
