so you could be off this
day; they sacrificed their
bodies and minds so you
could swim in the sea of
forgetfulness. They died
so you could celebrate ...
the least you could do is
remember the price, paid.

There really is too much of this "forgetful party atmosphere" on any of these specially meaningful Holidays... Luckily I have no one to "party" with and spend my time reviewing my War Video collection as a reminder of just WHAT IS DEMANDED when the World goes to war - serious stuff...Thanks for reminding us of why we are still here and free

Great write Karla. Memorial Day should be just what it is defined as. Not for parties and celebrating but for remembrance of sacrifices made. For me it has always been a very somber day. I wasn't born yet when Pearl Harbor was so cowardly attacked but I've been there. It was a day that should live in infamy and one I will not forget. The same goes for all the wars our heroes have fought in throughout our history to preserve every person's right to simple God given freedoms. You have said it very well Karla. God bless. (I'm outta here before I get started.)
The cemetary nearby has a very nice celebration, and VFW hands out flags to be put on cemetary graves. If anyone nearby a National Cemetary (one in So. Dallas - near Joe Pool Lake), they have a beautiful program/ceremony for all; more appropriate and solemn remembrance than a parade, methinks.

Good memorial poem. God bless you for serving your country and professing it. Glad you are safe and sure now. I will not forget the Veteran's on that day, and remember them always anyway.
Last year we went to a memorial day picnic and someone read the requirements to become a guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier. I found it all so amazing... and so touching...
I know that is a tangent, but I was touched at how much honor and dedication is given to those who have died in the line of duty... too bad that we don't always share our honor and dedication to those who have fought for our freedoms that are still living...
I am with lill'brother Ed, if doing Parades gets money you would see one coming to "commemorate" those brave men and women.

Hi Karla--myself, I don't want to be remembered in a parade by a bunch of people who don't care. Just look me in the eye when you talk to me (a rare occurrence).
I hope that we remember to Honor our Constitution by obeying it ~and making certain that those in Government~ OBEY the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Karla, you've brought up a profound thought in your poem? Is American tradition dying? Are the things we once believed in no longer important to the majority? Have we become complacent and impassive to what goes on all around us? I say bring on the parades and honor those who deserve honor more than anyone else. (It takes people to plan a parade, and the initiative has to come from someone, perhaps an individual, so should we look to our leaders to carry on American tradition or is there something we can do ourselves? I admit I don't know the answer--but wish I did.

Karla, of the very least we could stop and place our reflective thoughts on not just the day and the celebrations...we must look deeper into the commitment and loyalty of the ones who serve and have served this great country of ours...we must place Honor upon those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us to even be part of this place ...The United States of America...it is without any doubt who has given most to this...if not for our Military men and women we surely would not be a free people here today....
All the more so to place Honor upon them who serve us...
