... I duck, but then remember, we're at peace: ....

Image (c) 2007, Karla Dorman

Poem Artwork

The hollow thud of a
mortar fired sounds
like guns.  I duck, but
then remember, we're

at peace:  not so for
many far away from
home.  My eyes look
up.  A poppy bursts

open overhead, bright
like blood, only to
fade with memory of
sacrifice paid for my

freedom --- and yours.
The music that stirs my
soul lingers in honor of
those who've served;

my heart beats 'Taps'
so I will remember and
not forget.  As fireworks
color the night, tears

fall for the ones who
cannot watch them with
me --- my Daddy and
all who've gone, before.

I am grateful to those who hear those sounds in a different way, protecting me...so that I might be able to enjoy the freedoms of this land...

I like the yellow bursts of lights best, but the green and red are so beautiful too. It is hard on a holiday after losing a loved one. This is the first 4th of July for me too after Tom's dying, my hubby. But to celebrate the freedom of our nation and all is so important too and life must go on whatever.

Karla~

Our Fourth of July celebrations are tinged with sadness: our daddy is gone; he will no longer be able to celebrate the holiday. We may cry, and yet we'll laugh: daddy loved fireworks. The mortar sound, the sight of fireworks arcing into the night sky, his comment, "I love that sound!", as do we! We must carry on in his memory, celebrate our freedoms as Americans, remember the sacrifices of our brave military men and women in uniform so that we CAN be free. So on that note, thank YOU for your service; God bless you and all our veterans!

Especially loved the line: "...A poppy bursts open overhead, bright like blood, only to fade with memory of sacrifice paid for my freedom"--that says it all!!

Very well penned/imaged; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin, Karen Lynn.
