Standing in perfect formation, these tombstones with name after name, as far as the eye can see. Too many have paid the price. Freedom demands we remember each one.
Memorial Day is not for
the living, but for the dead, brave
men and women who laid down their
lives in service to their country.
How can I not give honor where
honor is due? To forget would
be a slap in the face to those
who were willing to take a stand.
I am grateful for your courage,
your sacrifice. I pray for your
families left behind, who grieve
the loss of a son, a daughter:
a pain no one should have to bear.
'Thank you' seems so inadequate,
but it's all that I have: THANK YOU.
A short story of mine was included in an anthology of short fiction by fourteen of Port Town Publishing Company's authors. It is out of print and no longer available except as a download. Contact me at charlenetess@yahoo.com if you want it.
