There are many sorts of addictions. This is one of them.

Poem Artwork

Addicted

It seems
I am addicted
To a butterfly

It started quite innocently

A look
A smile
A word

So insidiously innocent
I did not even notice

Like a sunburn
When finally felt
It is too late

You got me addicted
To your eyes
Your voice
Your scent
Your touch
Your taste

Now

You gift me your absence
Leave me with withdrawal
The very worst of symptoms
In the midst of raging wildfire
No rain of tears will extinguish

So much substance for shrinks
And would-be well-wishers

You have seared my soul
Seemingly sealed my fate
And you don’t even know it

I would never fault you
Perhaps I'd rather
 Hold responsible
Youth and recklessness

I pray I have not embraced

the worst of mistakes
on my journey...

I truely love how you used the symbolism of a butterfly for the one who left this heart in tears. I say that because of the meaning behind the butterly: How it transforms and then flys away!! No wonder we use the butterfly in the phrase: If you love someone you will let them go?
I could go on and on with all the thoughts your poem has stirred in me! I just love it!
Thank you sweet Regis*

Filled with unmet desires; this one is very beautiful in its sad portrayal of one heart left behind by the elusive "butterfly."
Yet it seems to be a relationship that never got off the ground. Let it drift away into a gentle memory, then, and look ahead.

The emotions and the wording are on the poetic pot. They touch my heart.

The image of a butterfly in human's life can only suit the libidinal emotions. But there was the innocence that learn to be wise; and the closing stanza shows that.

This is a very beautiful, heart-searing poem, Regis. One that speaks to all of us whose hearts and souls are so open and vulnerable, still searching both heavens and earth for some kind of safe anchorage. We attach so easily to all forms of beauty and vitality, as our souls see it, so richly and diversely displayed in others and in the world around us, and a part of us melts. I can so very much relate to the feelings you express so vividly for us here. Bless you, Kate xx

Robert Palmer sings Addicted To Love so we might as well face it. Now Reg, a butterfly flits from here to there and it is well known it is elusive. It's why we keep on chasing it. It's well worth our valuable time to keep up the chase because time says there is a special butterfly out there that will stay perched with its proboscis aimed at the nectar and it will keep on coming back to the sweet...The answer comes to me when Stella Stevens sings Butterfly Morning in the movie The Ballad of Cable Hogue, a good old Sam Pekinpah classic just like this poem you have written. Be well, Regis.
