While I question the honesty of some preachers,we should remember the contributions churches have made to education. As a child I read the Bible, almost memoorized the 12th chapter of Romans, and as a teenager, read adult religious materal.
Harvard, which is the oldest and most prestigous university in the United States was founded as a semminary to train ministers. The University of Chicago is losely affliated with the Baptist Church and Vanderbilt's cofounder was a bishop in the Methodist church.
In the 1960s many churches supported the Negro civil rights movement, and James Reeb, an Unitarian minister, became a martydom of the movement. He was killed in Selma, Alabama in 1965.
