At the time that Teddy Roosevelt attended Harvard [about 1880]only about one person in 5,000 attended college. Most of the adults who lived in the Tennessee village where I grew up only had about a third grade education. One man learned to read by attending church.
Early in the 1900s when Americans started to think about mass education so small of a percentage went on to college that it was decided that the traditional curriculum was not very relevent to most boys and girls.
This gave rise to vocational education, home making education for girls and the curve system of grading. Because of the very linited curriculum the small high school that I attended [about 200 students] I was forced to take agriculture in the 8th,9th and 12th grades. We never farmed.
Nevertheless, increasing literacy rates has transformed society. The advancement of women and a social justice orientated society likely would not have occured wirhout it.
