Athletes, Drugs, Your Children 3/24/2009 5:41:15 AM
The subject of athletes using drugs really hits home for me because I have a child who is an athlete. Many parents in this day and age have children who participate in one sport or maybe even a couple. My child is a world champion in the sport that she participates in and has been drug tested by the USA Anti-Doping Agency as well as the World Anti-Doping Agency. You may think that because we have experience in this area that I may not be the best one to discuss how to discuss this with your children.
I do think that when an athlete gets caught utilizing drugs, whether it is steroids or something like marijuana, then this is an issue that needs to be discussed with your children. Many times children look up to their favorite athletes and though my child is a world champion herself she still has her favorite athletes that she looks up to. It is rather difficult, for her especially, to see that there are athletes out there who are cheating in order to win.
I feel it is important for us to remind our children about the concept of fair play and that this is what athletics is really all about. Fine tuning natural ability with hard work and dedication is what really makes the true champion. I feel it is very important when a famous athlete gets caught using drugs and there is much media coverage on it that we allow our children to vent and ask questions about the situation. It is up to us to be able to answer these questions honestly while maintaining the idea of fair play and reminding our children of where this concept comes from.
It is important to let our children know that it there are consequences to every action that we commit. It does not matter if it is a good consequence to a good action or a bad consequence to a bad action. Consequences happen all the time and when the children learn what is happening to the people that are caught using drugs than they are going to hopefully be able to learn some very powerful lessons from this.
