Life Lessons For Little Ones 7/13/2009 4:42:28 AM
If you parent like my book teaches you to, you will have very confident children who know that they can do anything that they set their mind to. Last Thursday our 22 year old son flew for the first time by himself to see our 20 year old daughter in Oklahoma. I had told him in detail all that he had to know before we had gotten to the airport. He did fine.
On Sunday they went parasailing. When she told me that a week ago I almost had a heart attack. I told her that I didn't want her to take my baby parasailing. She said that she was my baby too. I told her that I didn't want her to go either. She said you know what you always say that if it isn't our time we will be fine. I hate it when she says things like that. I am glad I didn't know about all that this adventure entailed. Yesterday I found out that they were 500 feet in the air.
I guess they give you a bit of instruction before you take off. They both went together. My son asked her if the guy had said such and such and she said yes. She said as they were coming down she was headed for a gigantic fish that had jumped out of the water. They then got taken back up in the air. Now since she has done that I just know she will want to go skydiving sometime. She has already told me that she thought that it would be cool.
Her plan after a week of him visiting is to have him come and live there too. She would love to mother him, and he will listen to her, when he thinks I am being right all of the time. We are alike and clash alot. On Mothers Day he gave me a card about how we don't always agree, but he wrote that he loves me very much and underlined it. He had to read through alot of cards to find one like that. My mother thinks that we are always fighting and told him that one day, and he told her that we were not fighting but just discussing things. It feels like fighting to me though. At one time he thought that he should be a lawyer, because he liked to argue. I told him that he would be good at that part of being a lawyer, but that they have to read all of the time and he didn't like to read that well. He dropped that idea fast. I love him so much even though we do clash a bunch.
When he gets back my husband and him are going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Finally they have found something that they have in common. My son likes to play the guitar and would love to be in a band some day. My husband loves music and knows who all of the groups are and who played in them. My son for years has been trying to find something that they both would like. They are both so stubborn that they would not give in to going to something that they didn't like just to be together. They would go to a movie about sports, but there was not that many of them.
It will be interesting to see if she accomplishes this task. I have always thought that he would love it out there. We live in the country and I have raised four children that love the city. I do not quite know how that happened, but he has always said that he does not like our weather in indiana and wants alot of things that he can go do. So we will see what he decides.
An update - My daughter says he will not be moving there because he hates the heat out there. I can't blame him for that we went out to see her the last of July and the first of August. We now have a rule in our family. We don't even consider going in the summer. It was so hot last year it was around 103 degrees and we didn't even go out of her apartment it was so hot. Then we got to feeling so closed in, because her apartment is so small. My husband was having a panic attack on the way home. So we will have to wait and see what our son will end up doing. Till later - Lori
