Underwater locating and recovering 4/13/2014 8:24:20 AM
My latest novel, The Beddington Incident, reflects on deep ocean recovery similar to the ongoing task with Flight Ma 370. The task of locating a ship sunk in 1945 as portrayed in my novel, The Beddington Incident, was not as daunting as that of locating and recovering the "black Boxes" from MA 370. The Beddington was only down 400 feet in the Atlantic as opposed to the alleged three mile depth of 370. However, the book through my research and contact with the crew salvaging a non-fictitious ship at 800 feet deep tells of the methods and devices used in deep water recovery.
I was in contact with the Remote Operation Vehicle (ROV) pilot during his attempted recovery of three billion dollars worth platinum alleged to be in the cargo hold of the SS Port Nicholson torpedoed in 1942 by a German U-boat.
In the coming weeks or months (hopefully not years) the media will cover the locating and recovery of Flight MA370. ROV's and side-scan sonar devices will become a household word. These remote controlled submersibles will be deployed down in the depths with an umbilical cable transmitting signals from joy sticks operated by the ROV pilot that are presented on a display in the control room onboard ship. The side scan sonar devices will just show the acoustic returned outline of the aircraft. ROVs will give a visual indication with their bright lights, TV cameras. The ROV will have the capability of pick up items in its claws. Before deploying the ROV's the ballpark location of the black boxes must be known as detected by the side scan sonar devices and that's the daunting task now underway.
